At a low speed my motor cut out the other day. I looked back to see smoke coming out of the cowl. I opened it up to find an electrical fire which was put out instantly by a good fire extinguisher.

The hot spot looked like a voltage regulator located on the lower right side of the engine if you are standing behind looking towards the bow. There appears to be two of them. Going from the bottom up it seems there is a regulator, two relays (tilt & trim?) and then a second identical looking regulator.

Are there two regulators on this motor (seems unlikely)?

Am I correct in assuming these are regulators?

What could have caused it to catch fire? I don?t want to replace these do the re-wiring and have another flame off.

My repair manual is on order.

Thanks

Re: merc 40hp 4cyl (regulator?) fire.

are you sure one isn't a fuel pump and the other a rectifier (regulater)?
I guess one would have wires and the other hoses.
I'm not sure about the tilt and trim on the 40, the 60 has two selenoids, one for the up and one for the down, but I guess some have one that does both. Maybe you will get some more info................Jerry

Thanks for the reply.

Both items look the same. Square w/ wires coming out. Looks like aluminium housing w/ potted components.

Don't know why they would have two rectifiers. If you want to find out you can take the serial no. off the transom bracket of your motor and go to "Mercury parts express". Type in the no. and follow the "continue" buttons and you can get a parts blowup with part descriptions and prices. Like you would see on a microfish. It is handy for reassembling pumps and other gear boxes ............Like that. You could look at every part of the motor.
Sorry That's about all I can help you with............Jerry

Two regulators dosen't make sense to me either. Thanks for the tip. I'll get the numbers when I get home and check out the site you suggested.

Thanks again.
