Merc 454 - Marine vs Auto water pump

Do I need to buy a marine specific water pump for my 7.4L Mag motor?
Any recommendations on where to order? Need a water pump, impeller, and probably replace a few lower hoses and 2 o-rings on the out drive...

If you have closed cooling (and you're using 50:50 antifreeze) could probably get away with an automotive waterpump.

Get the marine pump, it'll have a bronze impeller(which won't matter if you are FWC) and a stainless backplate that won't rot out every few years.

You can buy a water pump for that engine from any number of places.

The first one being right here on iboats.

Or go here for the water pump, impeller and other stuff.

You can also get the correct one at NAPA.

Ebasicpower might be a little cheaper but don't forget to consider the shipping etc.

I would still get a marine pump in any case! I guess I should have said that up front!!

Yes, I'm freshwater cooling... Thanks for the references. It's got a slight leak somewhere (probably the weep hole) - indicating impending doom..
