Merc 454 tranny bad??

I bought the '86 a few days ago. I didn't run it in the water before purchase because I know the guy and he's around town here, and honestly he really needed the money and I got it for a ridiculous steal that yall would hate me.

So both motors run phenominally. Pretty much your standard 454s rebuilt about 150 hrs ago. Problem is when I try to put the port side in gear i get a pretty good grinding sound. Has anybody ever had this happen? It doesn't really sound good, and I'm prepared to pull that tranny and either have it repaired or drop a used one in.

Any ideas? Any common problems with these? My '83 runs great and both trannies are nice and smooth. Haven't had any other problems with them.

What are these,..?? TRS drives, with their transmissions,..??
V-drives,..??

I will post all the stats on here... figured that would help. I just got on here so it's all new to me!
