This past weekend using the instructions posted on this site I finnaly got around to start replacing the cam seals on my 1978 Merc 470.
I have the timing cover off and hope someone can help me with some questions.
The original seals appear to be pressed in the cover with what appears to be bronze or brass washers that are on the outside of each seal. The new seals I purchased do not have brass washers.
Do I reuse these washers or are they part of the original seals that have since been changed to a newer design ?
What is the best way to press or pry out the original seals? Should I heat the cover up a little to soften up the adhesive that was used? Do they come out from the front or does it matter?
I may have lucked out regarding the much written about grooves that the seals do to the cam shaft. The back seal part of the cam is smooth as glass and the front has a very very slight groove.
