Hey guys, been a long time since I posted. My '79 Merc 470 has Rochester 2gc carb on it- the number on it is 17057132 086. My question is, what does this cross reference to auto wise? All I need is a new float, needle and seat! Would seem like a lot of money to buy a whole rebuilt kit just for a few things, plus I was hoping to install tomorrow so I could do a little shark fishing. Any advice - greatly appreciated! Thank guys.

If you have to replace the needle and seat, and the float, you obviously need a complete rebuild. Besides, you will probably destroy the top gasket getting it apart to replace the float.
Do the job right.

PS: If you take your carb numbers to NAPA, they should have the parts.

Make sure you use an ethanol resistant accelerator pump. Old style pumps are a source for alot of Carb problems.

Last time I rebuilt my 1980 Mercruiser 470 carb, the carb kit was for a 1967 Chevy Impala with a 307 engine.

Who ever said Mercury was slow to make changes?

Ah, forgot to finish this thread out! I ended up with a carb kit & float for a '78 Pontiac Firebird from Napa.... Exactly what I needed, carb is like new - and was considerably less then the "marine" 3.7 rebuild kit. Thanks for all the help here!

Did you take the spring off of the old accelerator pump and use on the new one? This is important as the auto springs are softer.

Re: Merc 470 carb

I'm not sure the new kit had a spring, which forced me to use my old one...

Re: Merc 470 carb

Float was # CRB 2477, and the kit was # CRB 25731. These are both NAPA / Echlin kits. The only issue with the NAPA carb kit I got is that the base gasket only had 2 mounting holes - not four - and it didn't matter to me because I have a few extra ones. If I were to order again, I'd get CRB 25628 because it has the gasket with 4 holes. Go to napaonline.com and research it. If you go to autozone or advance and ask for a carburetor gasket set for a '78 Pontiac Firebird with a 3.8L 231 V6, you'll also find the same kits. Through them, GP Sorensen's float # is 779-1733 and carb kit # 96-357. These kits should be in the $20 range instead of $50+

Thanks for posting those numbers... kits aren't always in stock at our local merc shop, so that's good to know what the Napa numbers are for them. :D
