Merc 470 Electrical Issue

Keep burning up coils and solenoids. I have burnt 3 ea up trying to get it going 1980 470 engine and outdrive

Welcome... here's the original factory wiring.... trace yours out to this and see if it all matches up:

I have been goggling it and I think I need an internal resister coil. My set up does not have the in line resistor and the coils I used came from boats that had the in line resistor.

the Mercruiser Resistance wire is part# 94227A 2

I think you can get a 3 ohm Flamethrower coil from Petronix to replace the 1.5 ohm Merc coil, for about the cost of the resistor wire. Give them a call Pertronix Performance Products.

I actually have the Accel coil I took off in the first place thinking it was bad. Dug it out. Gonna give that a shot today. If not I have all the wiring off one of the boats I salvaged. I keep all that stuff in a cabinet in the boat house

The old coil got it done. But now I am have a fuel pick up problemGonna try and change the water separator filter.
