Merc 470 Thermostat

My temp hasn't been getting any higher than 120 according to my gauge. I pulled the thermostat when the engine was cold and it was open. I just pushed it closed. When they go bad, do they get stuck open? I always thought they didn't open when they went bad...

This is the one I have...

Also, what is the white thing and the gray tube for? Have anything to do with a fishfinder? I still have a lot to learn about boats...

i've no idea how they typically fail. but if yours is open when cool. it's broke and needs replaced. they're supposed to be closed when cool. then start to open at the stamped number on the tstat. + 20* to full open...

the grey tube is for your speedo, the white thing is the pitot that feeds the info to your speedo through the grey tube... it's a speedo thing only.

If by speedo, you mean speedometer, I don't have one of those... Thanks for the info.
