Hello all. I replied to someone else's topic with my question..and realized that's a no-no.

I just bought a 1995 Bayliner 2050 Capri Bowrider with a Mercruiser V8 i/o 5.0 alpha 1. The boat and engine are both in great shape, but wanted to ask if there are any known issues with these Gen II engines..anything to watch out for. Previous owner did use it in salt water but flushed diligently afterward...and the engine looks almost new (for a '95)!

I saw in a searching here, that these engines made after 95' are vortec (guess I missed the boat on that one...no pun intended ).

Any knowledge is much appreciated.

There Aren't any Known Design Issues with that driveline At All.......
But it Does have a Maintance Schedule that Should be followed.....

Vortec Heads were introduced in 96,+ in Boats a Year or 2 or 3 Later....... No,.. Your motor is Not a Vortec.....

Re: Merc 5.0 Alpha 1 - Gen II question

Thanks for the info, Bondo - good news! Any idea where I could find that maint. schedule online? Or, just buy the manual?

Also, if this thing is ran in salt water... besides flushing for 5-10min afterward, any other precautions I could do to preserve the engine life?

THANKS :D

Re: Merc 5.0 Alpha 1 - Gen II question

the big question is was anything like the drive bellows changed ?

If not your kinda at the max time for deferred maintenance before things small like this fail and cause big problems

A big X factor is the manifolds and risers this is a different one BUT changeing the gaskets in this area will give you a good idea what kind of condition there in
Re: Merc 5.0 Alpha 1 - Gen II question

2nd owner I bought it from and he said he's not had to have any engine work done on it. He bought it used from Olympic Boat Center 3 yrs ago...

Is it easy enough to check the manifolds and risers myself or should I have a mechanic do it? If I take it in to a mechanic for a check-up... what kinda things should I have checked? Manifolds and risers? Anything else?
