Merc 5.0 won't die

I have a 93 crownline with a 5.0 and after pulling a board if I want shut off the engine I usually have to make 2 or 3 attemps before it dies. I'm afraid of it reversing rotation and taking on water, otherwise it runs good. What causes the dieseling? thanks

Make sure it it not idleing too high. Also give it a few moments at idle after an extended hard run before shutting off.

I am not sure how high it should be idleing, but it seems to be close to 7-800, I have let it idle for about 20- 30 secs, It will turn off after several attemps, but wasn't sure if it was the carb or something else.
