1985 Sea Ray SRV300, twin 5.7L mercruisers with alpha 1 outdrives. Serial numbers are 0M086315 and 0M086308 (Re-powered in 2000).
Recently, I changed the oil and filter on my engines. The oil level prior to changing out was about an inch above the full mark. My Mercruiser factory manual states the engine should hold 5.5 quarts of oil. I put in 5 quarts and let the engine run for awhile to circulate and fill the oil filter. I let the oil settle for several minutes and checked the level. The dip stick read exactly the same as when I first started out, one inch above the full mark. I measured the oil stick and came up with 35 1/4" long and it matched the oil stick that is in the Mercruiser manual for this engine. The port motor was exactly the same as the starboard. I also placed the old oil back into the quart bottles and it came out to exactly 5 quarts in each motor.
I have a drain hose that goes to the oil pan drain plug and used a drill with oil pump attachment to drain the oil while it was warm. The old oil was very black and the new oil is clear/gold in color (AMSOIL MARINE). The oil did not turn dark after running the engine for 15 minutes. I was thinking if there was old oil still in there then the color would change.
Should I drain out the oil until it reaches the proper level indicated on the dip stick or leave it alone. The engines are quite, no valve noise and the oil pressure stays at 40 when at idle and goes up when you rev the motor to 2000 rpm.
One other note - The boat is in dry storage and I am not sure if it is level at this point.
Thank you in advance..
