Hi there, went to check the impeller on my new to me 66 Merc 50 # 2096957 and when I removed the gear housing, 2 Stainless Screws fell out.

Anyone know what these are for? Thanks

Those are not stock Mercury screws.
In fact, they are not even available in the States.
Those are Robertson screws invented and made by good ole Johnny Canuck!
They also happen to be the best screws made. Phillips pale in comparison just like slotted pale in comparison to Phillips.
But as I understand it you can't even buy them in the USA as they would compete with the American Phillips design.
They may have been used to secure the lower u shaped cowling (with the hp on it) or the rubber seal on the leg where that cowling meets the leg.
Have a look for empty holes. Might have been used to secure a transducer to the leg?

Well pardon me, I see you are in Canada LOL!

Oh Ya I guess now that we have NAFTA they should finally be available.
I stand corrected. Still when that motor was made they were not available and I don't think Merc has ever used them.

Thanks for the info.

Now I just have to figure out how to reattach them.

Before NAFTA whenever we had to ship in a wooded crate back to our unnamed head office in the US we used to build the crate using robertson screws. Of course we always included a red robertson INSIDE the crate.

Yes --those screws are in the US---I worked for a screw manufacturing company in Freetown Ma. and we made them there. They are actually getting pretty popular!!
