I just picked up a friends old boat. Came w/ a 4cyl 50hp mercury. Haven't had a chance to check what year it is. Looks like late 70's, 80's.

It started on the ears fine. Ran a little rough, sputtered a bit, but sounded healthy enough for a motor that hasn't been ran in over a year or two.

Put the boat in the water and it wouldn't start.

Something seems wrong w/ the starter. 90% of the time if you tried to turn it over for more then a few seconds, it sounded like the starter was hitting something and unable to spin anymore. Motor would make a buzz like it was trying to spin, but couldn't move. 10% of the time, you could keep turning it over as long as you wanted, but it didn't want to start despite any combination of throttle, choke, starter fluid.

Sometimes it would start, but then seemed to bog down like it was too rich. I did manage to get it into gear at one point and drive for about 10 minutes and when I slowed down, motor stalled. Couldn't start it again, had to come back on the 9.9 kicker, which was almost as fast as the merc. Tried to run the engine when I got home and gave up after 5 minutes as it wouldn't start.

When you push the primer bulb. Is it supposed to stop completely at some point or is fuel supposed to pour out of the carbs when you overprime.

I'm a decent home mechanic and have rebuilt some toyota engines, but I don't know much about outboards. Any help appreciated.

Instead of repeating what has been covered here many times before I suggest you check the iboat archives under "reviving a sleeping outboard" There may be nothing wrong with the starter other than a good cleaning out and maybe replacing the brushes. Make sure ALL electrical connections are clean and making solid contact too.

Rmouse is correct. No you are not supposed to have fuel flowing out of the carb as you prime.Indicates a bad needle and seat in the float bowl or the float is bad.Carb/jets are no doubt gummed up and should be cleaned.Fuel pump should be rebuilt along with new impeller.
