Merc 500, 1974 - mystery hose

Engine was not used for 2 years. Tried to start it and it wouldn't continue to run. Checked the fuel bulb and it wouldn't hold pressure. Opened the case and saw the hose from the input to the fuel pump leaking when I squeezed the bulb. So I thought I'd replace the fuel lines. Got enough parts off to get to everything and saw this hose in there - but I have no clue where it goes - on end goes to the bottom of the case and then comes up to nothing. Ran this 2 years ago many times without problem and nobody has done anything to it since it was parked.

I wasn't able to find a fuel/hose line diagram online. Anybody know what this is and where it should go? Maybe I'm just not seeing where it should be connected too? Seems like it should be the feed to the tell tail hole but not seeing the other end location.

I owned it for three years. Looks like someone sprayed it black (covered the hoses) - maybe they modified it?

Any help is appreciated.

I'm pretty sure it hooks to the "catch-tray" that's under the Carbs. to divert the fuel-spill out into the lake/river

I just went out and checked and there isn't anything like that in my engine - but the way the hose is formed that would be a good explanation. I think someone didn't bother to put it back.

Thanks you.

Welcome aboard.

Look again, Leon. The drip tray is part of the front support bracket. The drain hose falls off mine all the time when I move things or probe under the carbs. The nipple is circled and is more like a trough with an open top ;

Thanks GA_Boater; a picture is better than a thousand words :rockon: and yes mine would fall off just by looking at it & it's a bugger to get back on (without super long needle nose pliers)
