Hello,

I have a 1974 merc 3821986 50 hp outboard which has what I think is just a tuning problem but I thought I would ask since there, by reading thru the posts, is some excellent advice here. Starts and run good. Seems like there should be a bit more throttle and I have printed some instructions from here for an adjustment and tuning proceedure. What the engine does is after she warms up, when brought back to idle and then a hole shot is attempted, it stumbles and stalls. Then we have a hard start condition which eventually with some slight choking and throttling up manipulation, fires up and once past the stumble point, runs like a top again.

Think I am on the right track?

Ya that is what I am thinking also. I've been turning wrenches on cars, trucks, and buses my whole life, should be able to figure this one out.

Thanks,

Re: Merc 50hp stumble and stall

O.K., I read several different threads on this forum about two different problems. One was the going in forward when shifting in reverse and visa versa. The guy at the boat shop said "you can't assemble those lower units in forward. They must be assembled in N." So after several attempts his way, I tried it like I read here and did it in Forward. Nailed it first time! I am, however, a lower unit removal expert! LOL Could of done without the boat guys help. Really appreciate the help from the archives here though. The other was a very thorough tune up process from a member goes by the name Cris1943 I think. This was better than any of the manuals and was really quite simple. Only required one minor idle air adjustment when done to get my hole shots. Spent the last week on the water with the family, mostly my youngest son fishing, and the boat ran excellent! For the record, several blue gills, one 42 inch musky, his first walleye (3 pounder) and a 4 pound channel cat last night that was every fathers dream to watch him reel in.

Thanks again and appreciate the expert advice and help.
