I've got an older Mercury 6hp S/N 1737171 which I believe is a '63 or '64. The motor has been running pretty good for about a year and a half now but yesterday it stopped spraying water out of its "pee" hole. Yes, I know it now needs a new impeller. But should it have exhaust coming out of that hole too? Also, it seems this motor sure does leak a lot of gas and oil into the water when it isn't running (I mean it leaks right after it runs; it has never leaked in the garage). My question is how hard is it to replace the impeller? I'm not a mechanic but I've fixed all the minor problems with the motor so far. Where can I buy a service manual and what are all the parts, tools needed to replace the impeller. Does it matter what year? Is mine a 63 or 64?

While I'm repairing it, I might as well rebuild the carburetor. Do you know where to get a kit to rebuild? Also, this is a 50:1 ratio motor right? It does smoke a lot.

This has been a pretty good running motor so far and I really would like to keep this motor for many years. Its the perfect 4 wheel drive motor for shallow water (this explains why my impeller is shot).

Re: Merc 60 6hp Impeller

howdy big Al,
changing the impeller isn't too bad with a manual
in hand. I reccomend getting a mrec manual from
the dealer for that specific yr/model.
aftermarkets tend to group a whole bunch of them
together and it can be confusing.
getting the lower unit off is easy, putting it
back on can be tricky though.
no special tools except a 5/8 allen wrench.
(I think??? my manual doesn't cover that model)
more importantly, you need to make sure that
there isn't any crud in the cooling system.
based on what you said, sounds like there could be.
I've never had to tear apart the cooling system,
so hopefully someone else will give some pointers
on this.
good luck!
M.Y.

A appreciate the replies. That mercruiser website with all the parts and pretty good drawings is a great help. I went ahead and ordered a Seloc manual from Vintage Outboards.com for $32. I got an impeller kit and a carb rebuild kit. He also told me to get the fuel pump kit, which I'm not sure what it really is (only $4.50). So I spent a total of $70. Hopefully I won't have any problems using this manual.
