I have a 1985 merc 60. It blew the water jacket gasket around #3 cylinder. I fix it and the motor worked fine for months, then while running full speed the motor just slowed down and stopped. The motor cranks up, but is knocking. Other than checking compression where should I go from here and is it worth fixing?
PS: The motor was pumping water the whole time and still does

jc60merc,
Sounds like classic over-heating symptoms to me.When was the impeller replaced last?Enough oil in the gas?Check water pump, thermostat(stuck closed),oil mix, obstructions in cooling. Is there a strong stream at idle? Are you using a quality TCW3 oil?

hey Reel,
There was good water out the pee hole, at idle and full speed. The pump was replace 2 years ago.
Using the same oil and mix as always.
The motor never gave me any problems until about 4 months ago.
I have repair serveral motors in the past, but have run into weird things with mercs

Sounds like toast. For sure check compression. Whether its worth rebuilding or not is a judgement call to be made by you with the advice of a competent mechanic who can see what damage it has.
