Hello everyone

Just bought a mercury 60hp 1984, before taking it out just like to check something. When in forward gear which way should the prop turn. Min e when in forward turns anti clockwise when looking from the rear. Is this correct? I ask because when in forward the prop locks in both directions and when in reverse it ratchets. On the shift block on the head it states the correct direction, but as i say its not ratcheting in forward.
Many thanks in advance

Welcome to iboats. :)

Someting is backwards. Could be in the gearcase or control. Look at the mechanism at the motor. The shift cable should slide forward for forward, etc.

Re: merc 60hp prop rotation

Many thanks for the quick reply. When i push the control lever forward the mechanism on the outboard moves forward, so i assume something is about face in the crankcase. Any ideas anyone. Any help appreciated.

Martin

Sounds like the the lower unit was removed and reinstalled with the shift shafts out of alignment. Probably need to pull the lower unit. You can put the shifter control in forward, drop the lower unit, rotate the lower unit shift shaft to put it in forward (prop ratchets)and reassemble taking care to maintain shaft position and alignments.

Many thanks everyone all sorted now. As Ernie said, I Removed the lower half and repositioned the shift shaft coupler (say that when you are drunk) and now its fine.

Martin
