The sieral # is 4265448 which is what I found was a 1975. It started off losing fire on all cylinders then regained it for a couple trips on the water. After the second time it lost fire I jumped the gun and bought a new coil not thinking to run any tests to see what the problem was (I know stupidity on my part)
After the new coil didn't work I became a little smarter and started testing. I did the Mercury battery powered CDI test for distributor models.
1. Turn off ignion
2. Disconnect all 3 wires on the distributor side of the switchbox.
3. Remove the HV lead from the coil to the center cap (remember it unscrews
from cap)
4. Reconnect that HV center lead to the COIL side only.
5. Position that HV lead about about 3/8" from ground (block, shrouds etc)
and find a way to hold it there.
6. Jumper the brown and white terminals on the dist. side of the switchbox
together.
RECONNECT BATTERRY
7. Check that you have +12 V at red terminal.
8. Turn on ignition and verify +12V at white terminal (on red terminal side)
9. Touch the black terminal to ground - unit should cause spark each time you touch ground.
If you get spark with the distributor bypassed, and it won't fire with the distributor connected, the trigger is bad and the entire distributor housing assimbly must be replaced.
If you get no spark using the test, the switchbox is probably bad. In that case, be sure to check for correct power on the switchbox, check all connections, and check the coil's resistance to make sure it is OK.
I got no spark when I touched the black terminal to a ground.
After inspecting the switchbox I found the black casing on the face of it was extremely soft on the bottom around where the green wire connects that goes to the coil. I talked with a local boat mechanic and he said that the switchbox had gotten hot and was more than likely bad so I purchased another.
Now I am thinking I might have let the stupididty take over again and jumped the gun since I am still not getting any fire and when I did the CDI test again I got the same results.
Can someone give me any ideas as to what I need to check now... any other tests to run?
I am really deperate here and any help would be greatly appreciated
Sorry for such a long post but I wanted to give all the details I could.
