I have a merc 650 about 1960s era, I have never owned an outboard before and just wondering if this is normal.
I have run it with earmuffs and water is coming out peehole and also around prop which seems fine, the left side of powerhead is cool to the touch but the right side where the cylinders are feels hot, is this normal and nothing to worry about or should the right side be cool too. In a car the cylinder block gets hot, is it the same in an outboard

Thanks in advance

That motor is a crossflow. The port side will have the waterjacket over the exhaust. It should be cool or cold. The starboard side of the motor has the transfer ports. These will get warm, but not scalding. The cylinder head will get lukewarm at idle, warmer at speed.
