Hi all. I have a 1974 merc 650 that has a 1.64 ratio lower unit. I just acquired a 1972 merc 650 with a 2:1 although I still come up with 2:0 by counting turns of the drive shaft. I checked this forum and I have seen reference to the 3 cylinder 650 having both a 1:64 and a 2:1. Ithe 72 looks like all the parts match and the 74 looks like its been frankensteined as it does have an earlier powerhead ( not painted) and some "interesting" ignition mods.my question is which unit is correct? The unit from the 72 is in better condition and could be used as is. The 74 will need some seals and the prop shaft bearings have some lateral play although there are no leaks out of the prop shaft seals. Which one would the more knowledgeable members on the forum use? I could use some opinions. Thanks in advance y'all.

A 72 650 should be a 1.64:1 ratio. 2:1 wasn't offered as an option. The 500 in the 1970s had a 2:1 gearcase. Perhaps the 72 has a LU from a 500. You are certain it is a 2:1 reduction?

Yeah, I'm quite sure it's a 2:1. That's a shame. I pressurized to 15psi and it only lost one pound overnight. I feel it's best to repair the 1:64 case and move on.
