I have 1999 Crownline 266ccr with 7.4 Mercruiser. Tech said starter needs to be replaced. Can this be done without pulling the manifold? is this a DIY job or should I take to shop? Also what is a cost range for shop to do this - i know there are many variables but looking for a range.

Thanks in advanced for help.

Re: Merc 7.4 starter replacement

I have changed starters on 7.4's in 15 minutes, and on others I have had to pull the engine out of the boat to replace. It all depends on access.

It's a DIY job for some people, others can't do it all, just depends on your skills, abilities, and the tools you have.

Why didn't you ask the tech that said it needed replaced how much. Since he has seen the boat, he knows what it will take and can give you an estimate. No one here can give you an estimate, because we can't see it either.

Re: Merc 7.4 starter replacement

Don, tech was working on the side troubleshooting an electrical issue I was having and couldnt figure out - ended up being a fuse. Once that was done he couldn't get it started. he doesn't have time to tackle the starter. said it could be 10-11hrs of labor. I guess I'll need to take a look and see if it is accessable.

Would you recommend getting a new starter or having existing one rebuilt?

Why couldn't he get it started, it may not be the starter. Did he troubleshoot it or just guessing?

He never actually did any troubleshooting of the starter. He said it is probably the starter. Guess I should try some trouble shooting
