I have a 1969 merc 800 with a series of problems. Since it is my first motor I have been going through all the pains of on the job training. New water pump, new wiring harness, rebuilt the carbs and tried to retime it. Still running rough and can't get it to idle right. I ruined the spark plug and coil wires today. I didn't know enough to unscrew them for the cap. FYI I did purchase a service manual but I have a question that the book hasn't been able to answer. There is a threaded rod that does from the distributor to the "vertical" lever. How do I adjust it? Please don't tell me not to move it because it is too late. FYI when I purchased this motor it came with a 1966 merc 500 and I also picked up another 1969 merc 800 on ebay so I have a parts motor. Is the 50 worth anything? It seems to have some mechanical troubles too.

All that adjustment between the spark advance arm and the distributer housing does is give a person a place to get the cable adjustment and the linkage in the ball park don't worry about it.

Laddies, thanks for the reply. You seem to be the answer man.
