I have a 1970's era, Mercury 800 series (80hp)
is there a way of checking the coil? Also, does anyone have an idea on cost to replace?

I am not getting spark so the coil would be the logical thing to look at I would guess.....correct? Thanks!

Yes, it is the first thing to check. you can switch two of them around, and see if missing spark goes with the same coil.
You can check for an open winding by using an ohmeter . You should get between 100 and 600ohms, from it's ground wire to it's other low-tension wire (accross it's coil).

If the coil checks-out, next check would be trigger. If trigger pulse is good, coil is good, the switchbox is bad by process of elimination.
Anything else would manifest itself as no spark to all cylinders.

I'm sorry. You asked about approximate cost...They are about 40 buks each. But look around your town for a used one (10-20buks each).

outboardparts.com,

Thank you 12Footer! any help is greatly appreciated. I do not have any spark at all, she just spins with not even a hic-cup, so I take it that is a switchbox problem.

What year (or serial number) 80hp? The early '70s had a different ignition than the late '70s.

1971 & I have same motor. You're ahead of me, though - mine ran perfectly last fall, but was no spark stone cold this Spring. I plan to try your "clean the contacts" approach once I clear up some space on the work rack.

So you're getting spark, but it won't fire? Did you try some premix (fuel oil/mix) sprayed into the carb throats while cranking the starter? (WARNING: fire hazard could cause serious injury or death).
