Merc 85 problem

I was having problems with my merc 850 and troubleshot it to a bad coil when running the engine the bun y ears got knocked off the motor and it burnt up the impeller and over heated now I can't get the motor started after that overheat I have fuel and I have spark I have used starter fluid and still no vroom I'm stumped

By the sounds of it the engine is toast. I would of thought you have lost a lot of compression, hence why it won't start. Sorry to be the first to tell you, but from what you have said, and if the engine has been run without water for a sustained length of time, You've probably killed it....:facepalm:

Bad things can happen with no cooling to outboard.take all spark plugs out,ground them and spray some wd40 or other lubricant.turn flywheel slowly by hand, lubricate good.now is the time to check compression.if you would have no compression on one cyl engine would still fire on muffs but it will be no go under load on water.good luck.

I'm agreeing with the lads above in that the overhead caused your compression to drop. Your rings may have stuck or you have have cracked one or more scoring the cylinder. Check compression is your first step. Compression gauges are relatively cheap and always good to have.
