Merc 850 Carb Differences

Does anyone have any idea what the differences were between the 1975 and before Tillotson carbs for these engines and the 1976 & up mercarbs? I'm wondering if they can be interchanged, and if so was one larger or smaller than the other?

If I remember correctly, the carb studs on the crankcase cover were staggered on the sidebowl carbs. Are they staggered on the center bowl carbs as well?
