1976 Serial #4369597 Merc 850

Question 1. Where should I mount the tilt and trim pump. Inside boat or outside. Do you need to mount it completly through the hull?

Are there any good parts diagrams on the web? I am going to need a choke switch. The one from the remote control is missing. If one is not available has anyone used a substitute switch?

Are these reliable motors?

I bought it off ebay for 626. I will be trying to fire it up this week. Wish me luck.

Thanks,

Rick

Re: Merc 850 Questions

All the parts diagrams on the web are grainy and do not include any tilt trim diagrams or the remote control diagrams. I tried dougrussel and ishopmarine. Mercury said that my motor does not exsist according to the serial number.

Thanks,

Rick

Re: Merc 850 Questions

Hi Rick,

Usually the T&T Pump is mounted down on the floor, at the transom (where the battery and fuel tank live in most smaller boats...)

I also have a Merc 850; a 1977 model. When I first got it last year, I asked the same question as to it's reliability...and the consensus of opinions seemed to be that it is an "OK" motor...decent for it's age...but that it wouldn't win any awards. Mine has been fine so far...

How's your wiring under the cowl? Mine was totally shot...the insulation jkust flaked off when the wires were touched. Apparently very common on that vintage of Merc.

Mine has the distributor free ignition...if yours is a year older...you might have the distributor...makes a big difference when ordering elecrical parts and wiring harness...

As for diagrams...you can try
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectDocs.asp?doc_nbr=+74963

Let us know how things turn out. What sort of boat are you putting it on?

Thanks for reading, Chuck

Re: Merc 850 Questions

Rick

I think any push button type switch will work for the choke. I have a remote with the back off of it. I'll try to take a photo of the wiring of the key switch and choke.
