First time poster - hope someone can help. 1973 model 85 HP - When in forward, the prop only spins CW as it should, but it ratchets when it turns. When in neutral, it will spin both ways but still ratchets in either direction. When in reverse, prop only spins 1/3 revolution either way like it should. It locks into gear in forward and reverse like it should. However, I can only get "true" neutral (no ratcheting) just before it slides into reverse. I'm wondering if the EZ Shift clutch is hanging up in the gear housing. Also, could the shift shaft have jumped a spline groove and neutral is now out of place? Everything I described is with the cables removed. Manual says to align the retaining pin where the cable connects with the front of the exhaust case and this should be neutral. As I said though, I have to slide the piece where the cable attaches at least an inch past this point and right before it goes into reverse to get true neutral without ratcheting in either direction. I don't think I can adjust the cable that far back and still get proper function from the controller. Any help is appreciated.
