Merc 888, Prestolite to Oildyne tilt/trim pump

A leak in the tilt/trim and a non-functional reverse-lockout have prompted me to replace my tilt/trim pump.

I got an 'Oildyne' type pump (SAE J1711 or something like that) from Ebay, which has 4 hoses coming off of it (it has 2 connections on the front, which then each have a brass 'block' that allows 2 hoses to hook up to each 'side' of the new-style pump).

From what I've read here, to do the switch, you hook 2 hoses up, one from each side of the pump, directly to the outdrive.

So, why do I have 4? Was this pump from a twin-outdrive boat, or do I have the wrong pump, or what?

Post a pic of what you got. Pumps have 1 up and 1 down line. Even twins have their own system

Sounds like you may have found an old Mercury outboard trim pump. As I recall, they have 4 lines going to them.

I'm replacing the separate reverse-lock, prestolite type (with the black metal res. on the bottom, that you fill through the screw-hole.

Don't have a digicam, but the new pump LOOKS like the new type (plastic tank, yellow cap, says 'SAE J1711' on the plastic motor housing) - it just had 4 lines hooked up to it.

The 4 lines went (2 each) into 2 brass 2-into-1 fittings, that then went into the pump.

I'm thinking I can replace those 2-into-1s with regular 1-1 fittings, and then I should be able to use it - unless this one (like the one it's replacing) requires a reverse-lock....

But had 4 hoses hooked up to it, 2 to each 'side' of the pump....

From all appearances, the 'Up' and 'Down' ports have 'F' fittings (think 'T' fitting, but both 'outs' on the same side, 90 degrees from the 'in') attached. 2 identical hoses are hooked up to each 'F' fitting.

I am thinking of just replacing the 'F' fittings with 'L' fittings, and going with that...
