I have a 75 ray and a 302 merc and i took it out for the first time today i jus got the boat a cple mnths ago and have been restoring it well when i took it out today, it took a while idling before i could put it in gear if i dont have gas flowin thru it it wants to quit, secondly i drove it about 2 miles and turned around and on the way back i was cruising about 25 mph and the motor kept trying to cht out on me it did it a few times, idk what the problem was so i was looking at the motor and i noticed a hose would collapse everytime o gave it throttle and idk what the hose is for so im posting a pic and hopefully u all can tell me what it is and if that was causing the problem.2011-06-05_14-42-03_932.jpg

Re: merc 888 suction hose?

that is the fresh water supply hose from the pump in the drive

it should not be collapsing like that

it appears as though someone has re-routed the cooling hoses/removed them for the risers/manifolds and without seeing the whole system it would be difficult to tell exactly what is going on

quick guess is that the water pump in the drive isn't supplying enough water to the t-stat housing/by not having the hose routing or hoses actually missing the vaccuum created by the circ pump on the engine collapses the supply hose

in any case it is NOT wise to run the engine like that, you risk overheating the engine and causing major damage to it

Why are all those ports blocked off? That can't be right. Can you post a couple of pictures so I can see all the hoses, manifolds etc. It looks like the hoses are all wrong. Do you have an outdrive? Do you have a belt driven raw water pump?

I also have a merc 888 and can tell you your cooling hoses are all wrong. The motor is not cooling properly. The hoses need to be attached to the upper thermostat housing. I suggest you get yourself a mercruiser manual and figure out where all the hose go and then if you still have problems then start to diagnosis them.

I think the link below will show you how the hoses should be installed. Until you get them right, DO NOT run the engine.
The top drawing is the one you want not the lower one.

I just did some quick work on one of your pictures. the red lines show where the hoses should be hooked, the green lines show hoses that are missing. The yellow ones, I can't tell where they hook, can you take some pictures of the hose routing on the back of the engine. Include one of where your intake hose (the one that collapses) is hooked.

Ok i will get u some pics of whre the hose goes that collapses y would somebody route them this way if its not correct? And would that be the reason why the motor was trying to cut out? And thanks for the diagram it helps out a lot

Because they didn't have a clue what they were doing. Probably an automotive mechanic that thinks boats are the same. have seen this happen many times.

And would that be the reason why the motor was trying to cut out?

It's probably overheating. I just hope it hasn't damaged the engine.

Re: merc 888 suction hose?

Ok guys i talked to a guy down by my house and he looked at the hoses on the motor and told.me it was ok like that? He said there was another part that was missing thats why it was hooked up that way, and i told him it wasnt suppose to be like that and he sais it would be fine to just get another hose to replace the one that collapses? Any inputs?

Glad to hear you found someone that would tell you exactly what you wanted to hear. His information is far from right, but what you wanted to hear.

Better have him explain to you how you can have suction on a system that is open, and slightly pressurized, and why all those thermostat housing connections were designed into the housing but not used.

My guess, your "Guy down the street" is an AUTO mechanic .................... right.

Re: merc 888 suction hose?

I dont know if he was an auto mechanic or not he looked at my boat and said he had one that was hooked up the same way, do i believe him? I never said i did i want mine hooked up right so im doing mine the way the diagram shows i was pretty much just asking is there any truth to what he was saying, about there being a part missing? Everything that was on the diagram that u sent me don is on the motor. But i plan on hooking it all up the right way, im kinda lost on the whole.inboard thing and i cant afford to take it to a dealership and pay 95 bucks an hour so im just trying to collect as much info as possible

Re: merc 888 suction hose?

You don't have to take it to a dealer. All you have to do is buy the hoses from a dealer (or online) and install them in the correct location.
But you can't go listening to every one just because they had one like it. That doesn't mean it's right.
I've already given you information on hooking it up right, and you was going to take some more pictures. But you stopped posting on the 5th.

Re: merc 888 suction hose?

You're missing a bolt on the t-stat housing as well. You can't listen to the guy down the street because the motor he had may have been routed differently in regards to the cooling system. My 351w (1976 boat) was plumbed exactly like yours SHOULD be done. It isn't necessarily intuitive due to the number of hoses running back and forth. My suggestion to you would be to buy all new hoses INCLUDING the water pump to t-stat hose since that one has a coil of wire inside of it to keep it from collapsing on the sharp bends.

I see exactly how yours is ran, and it isn't the correct way. Basically you are taking water straight from the thermostat and going to the rear of the exhaust manifold and out to the risers from the manifolds. The original (correct) system runs line to-and-from the manifolds back to the thermostat housing, THEN separate hoses out to the risers.

Re: merc 888 suction hose?

When I get home today I will take a picture of the '76 302 sitting on my garage floor that is a good running motor and see if you can pick out what you are missing. Hopefully you can figure it out, don't even ask why I have a 302 merc sitting around, cause I am not sure either, I just do.
