I have been told that the "basic" Merc 90 (3-cyl) is mostly the same engine as the 115. Supposedly, a few external parts make the difference and the guts of the powerhead are the same. Any truth to this? Seems like too simple a route to 25 more horse....

Hi James,

You are right! It is not as simple as that, the only thing the 90hp 3 cylinder 2 stroke has in common with the 115hp is that they have the same bore and stroke, maybe the pistons are interchangeable. The 115hp is a 4 cylinder inline and shares the same powerhead as the 125. The 90 is the same 3 cylinder powerhead as the 75hp. I have heard the new 90hp 2 stroke for 2004 will be 1.5 litres and is the same powerhead as the new 115 & 125, it will be an optimax.

Bob
