My 2002 90 HP Merc outboard is still running on the original water pump, as far a I know (bought the boat 5-6 years ago).

The dealer estimates $200 for the pump and about $350 labour to change it. I'm thinking about doing it myself. I'm pretty handy with tools, and have everything I need for the job.

Anybody else tackled this? Is it something I should attempt? Or take it to the dealer?

Thanks.

It is relatively easy job to do yourself and will teach you a lot about your engine. You will certainly do it for a lot less than your quote.

What is the engine s/n and do you have the service manual?

If it is a salt water motor then there could be issues.---------The impeller is about all you need in most cases , as above.--------If all bolts come out easy then about an hrs work.--Definitely a job should learn to do yourself.-----------If in salt water ( as I suspect here ) then you might want to do this on a regular basis just to keep bolts from seizing.
