Merc 90hp 2 stroke 1999 fuel guage problem

hi
i wonder if anyone can help me. i have a boston whaler with 90hp 2 stroke merc outboard - when i turn on the ignition the fuel and temp guage needles immediately go to zero, like theres an electrical fault - but what? what should i check- the broker i bought from said they tried a new fule guage on the boat but it didnt work and they said they cant help - but i really dont think they did this?? either way both guages do this

Probably faulty wiring. Make sure they are both grounded and they should also get 12 volts when the key is turned on.

thanks i have checked the wiring on both guages and it appears to be correct and tight , its strange how both guages go to zero when the ignition is turned on
