Hey guys,, I was looking at the drawing I think Don sent me on another thread with the change in the alignment bar,, This only changes the second step up on the bar and the drawing doesn't give the diameter of the smallest end. I had my bar manufactured by using another as a guide so I need to verify the dimension of the smallest end as well. I've looked for drawings ect but they only address the change made to the bar and are only pertaining to the second diameter not the part that goes into the engine. Thanks for any help..

Yup that's what I needed.. I think a big problem I'm having is due to my alignment bar not having either of the (2) 45 degree chamfers on the edges.. My machinists are checking the dimensions now.. Thanks again.. Happy New Years to all...

The 45*'s have nothing to do with it being tight in the hole (god that sounds dirty). a .005 over size will give you heartburn.

I ran down to the "steel store" and bought myself a 3' long 1.375" dia piece of steel.

I went over to the neighbors house and chucked it up in the lathe and in about an hour I had a great alignment tool. I put the chamfers on it but they aren't really required. It just makes it somewhat easier to get it in the hole.

Cheers,

Happy New Year everyone! That post is of great importance to me ,since I`ll be needing an allignment tool soon and in my country finding one (no matter rent or buy)is almost impossible. What I do not see on the drawing is the overall lenght of the tool and any additional change in diameter or shape. Can someone clear that for me?Sorry for the slight off topic!

Ayuh,......

Mine is about 2,+ 1/2' long,.....
You want a Stout handle on it,... Mines probabaly 1,+ 1/2",+ is Knurled.....

If I were going to modify mine,....
It would have a 1/2" hole cross drilled in the handle end,......
Then I could slip a 3/8" extension thru it for a "T" handle.......

I'll get around to it,... Someday...........................

Why would you drill a 1/2" hole for a 3/8" crossbar... ???? Why not drill a 3/8" hole, then the crossbar would have less chance of slipping and you saying bad words. :D:D:D:D or doing this:rolleyes:.

And why have a crossbar at all, if you get the alignment right, you should be able to pull it out with two fingers

Well,.............

My Craftsman,+ Snap-On 3/8" drive extensions are All over 3/8" OD..........
But they will drop into a 1/2" Hole.......

And why have a crossbar at all, if you get the alignment right, you should be able to pull it out with two fingers

That would be for Before I get it Right.......

Doing those 3 Off-Shore motors over the last couple of weeks convinced me of the Need...........

Re: Merc alignment tool exact dimension???

My initial alignment tool ended up being .011 too large at the portion that slid into the engine coupler. That combined with the fact that I actually bent it (using it to move the old engine block) made life miserable.. I couldn't believe that I had bent steel until he chucked it up on the lathe and I saw the wobble.. Oh well,, I just hope I didn't do too much damage.. Worse case I pull the engine for the third time,, I've got that down to about 15 minutes now..

Holidays are over,,, you guys are brutal... Forgot to mention that 15 minutes included breaking it down to a short block to lighten it some and a gear oil and impeller change..

Are alignment tools the same for Merc and VP, GM and Ford blocks?

Re: Merc alignment tool exact dimension???

Yes i tend to be tough on tools, I get my moneys worth from the snap-on man.. One more question concerning this alignment tool... My machinists made me a new one (again),, took it down today and it will only enter the gimbral (sp) bearing maybe 1/4 inch,, took all my inner strength not to throw it but I kept my temper and went straight to yet another machine shop to have them mic it.. All the dimensions are right at the EXACT proper dimension as per the diagram except for the largest portion which is about .002 too large.. Is this tool so close tolerence that .002 would make a difference?? I'm actually considering having them take a couple thousandths off the whole thing tomorrow,,, what do ya think?? I really don't think I damaged the coupler or bearing, heck I don't think it's even getting in far enough to enter the coupler.. At least the other bent/ oversized tool would go in..
