I am looking to possibly purchase a 1993 Bayliner 3058 with about 600hours
the boat is in good shape but I am concerned that the twin 350's may be too much power for Alpha one outdrives.

has anyone had any experience with these or had problems with this configuration

Thanks

5400RPMS WOT and 65 MPH here with the Alpha 1 outdrive with no issues. I dont run WOT much but in the 3 years I've own the boat no problems. I run Merc HIPO Fluid also which may help.

it also depends on whether your motors are Fuel injected or carbed.

if motors are carbed then alpha should be okay. but if they are injected then you should have a bravo drivwe on there

I believe that the engines are injected...
They're also twins... does that make any difference?

Factory installed drives, hardly overpowered.
I'd be more concerned about a sixteen year old boat run in saltwater.
You might find the money spent on a survey very well spent.

This is a freshwater boat

However there is also a question about the powere steering pump which is present but appears to be disconnected
Seller has heard two stories, one is get a belt on it and fresh fluid and you should be good to go

second is why would you need it and it would be expensive to hook up

I have a call into the mechanic as well

Re: Merc. alpha 1 with 350 engines

Thanks... I just need to get over the clunk when it goes into gear.
The boat doesn't come with a trailer but that's something that I am researching

I understand that the 3058 weighs between 9 and 10,000 lb with a trailer probably 12-13,000, Pushing the limit for a '99 F-250 with a V-10 (my truck) but it would work in a pinch.

we'll probably keep it moored most of the time anyway.

any other advice for this model ('93 bayliner 3058) would be greatly appreciated

Yes. Since there are two drives to share the gruntwork, it's not a problem.

Would it be better if they were B2s or B3s? Sure, but not necessary.

That is just typical of Alpha drives. They have dog style clutches and the go "Clunk" when you put them in gear.
To high an idle will cause it to be louder, and can also damage the drives. Make sure the idle is below 700 rpm (in gear)

The drives are good for 300 HP . Since you have a 93, you have carbed engines with only 260 HP. No problem at all for the Alpha I Gen II drive.
Sure Bravo would be better, but you don't want to know what that will cost to change it over.

Yes, have it surveyed. Looking for hull blisters and softspot. Also since it's a Bayliner, you want to really looking into the hardware in the head, galley, latches, and whatnots, as that can be one place that Bayliner saves a lot of money, compared to other boats.

Regarding the power steering pump, if it's just a bad pump, they are not too expensive to replace. But on a twin application, doesn't it need just one power steering pump? Maybe there is a good on not being used on the other engine?

Re: Merc. alpha 1 with 350 engines

Does both engine have power steering pumps on them? Many times the power steering hoses are hooked together and the belt removed from one of the engines. The engine that has the PS hooked up is the one controlling both drives. They have a steel bar hooked between the drives.
It could also be converted to Hydraulic steering and not need power steering.
A survey should tell you what is going on. Especially on that size boat. A survey is MANDITORY.
It's a 93. It may not be as Bayliner sent it out. Lots of owner repairs, upgrades (at or downgrades, depending on what it was).

Re: Merc. alpha 1 with 350 engines

Well the engines are injected... I believe I've already said that... but i'm not exactly sure whether it has the stearing on each of the engines or just one that works for both although I haven't heard anything about two...

And yes... I do plan to get a good survey on the boat if I buy it.

Another thing.. It has a ton of fishing gear which includes...
-2005 15HP Honda kicker with electric start, electric tilt, and on board throttle control
-2 Big Jon electric planer board reels
-2 Big jon electric downriggers
-14 rod holders
-TR-1 Gold auto pilot
-lure jensen speed indicator
-LMS 350 A Lowrance graph
-7.5' Livingston Dinghy

I don't do much fishing and I would probably either sell all of this, or negotiate a lower price without it... does anyone know about what I could get for all of that?

This isn't the forum for all that fryguy, If you have IO questions, Great!, this is your place. The rest of it belongs over in the Boat Topics and Questions forum.

As far as are those engines being injectied or not? Who knows, Baylineer didn't use very many EFI engines in 93. Cost too much.
Even if it is EFI, they are TBI and show as 280HP. Still well below the Alpha I Gen II max or 300.
