So all of my boating life has been with the "good old" merc/alpha engine and drive set up, but next year I'll be getting a new boat (brand spanking!!) and the option is there to switch to the volvo set up. I have no idea about the volvo product. Anybody have any pros and cons?

If you get the chance to go to Volvo, do it. You will NEVER regret it IMHO.

Why is that though? I'm not doubting you, your advice has never been off point yet, just want to know what the differences really are.

Volvo, hands down.......(I thought there new forward prop drive system I saw in an ad was a joke, until I read up on it. Ingenious!)
Good Luck with the new boat.

Volvo:
2 yr. warranty
smooth cone clutch
drive saver coupling

Merc:
1 yr. warranty
noisy dog clutch
no coupling

Check some of the other boat forums and do a search Volvo vs. Mercury. Interesting reading. Google Volvo vs. Mercury and see what you come up with. Check with a dealership that sells/services both products. See what they recommend. Good luck.
