I need help removing the carrier bearing on a 1981 90 H.P. Merc. I got the retainer out without any problem but I do not have the high dollar puller that the book calls out. Can another hub type puller be adapted? The problem is the unit will not shift into reverse or nuetral so I am assuming the dog clutch is toast. Any Ideas would be great!! Thanks!!

Re: Merc Carrier Bearing Removal

Cole (Seloc manual) suggests putting the prop shaft in a soft-jawed vice, and hitting the lower unit with a soft mallet, halfway between the cavitation plate & prop shaft. Basically, this drives the lower unit off the bearing carrier/prop shaft. Be careful not to drop the lower unit when it comes off. If it's stubborn, torch heat carefully applied to the housing may help.
