merc. compatibility qustion

i have a 1972 mercury 80hp.i am not a motor person so bear w/me.would a 78 70hp merc be compatible,parts wise?such as stator,power packs,coils,etc.thanks in advance.

The 80 is a large block 4 cyl and the 70 a small block 3 cyl about the only thing the share is the name and color of paint
