I have a friend with a new mercury control box and cables and he is looking to use it on an older merc motor late 70"s early 80's. On my Yamaha I had to make adjustments to the box in regards to the shifting being pull vs push. Could this be an issue on my friends merc. I will explain to him how to check but I don't want to complicate it for him if this is not an issue with Mercury control compatibility. Thanks for any input

Re: Merc control box

Simple enough to move the control and the shifter in the engine and see for yourself. Years ago Merc had the shifter on the starboard side as I recall. Later as I recall, when they dispensed with the external electrical connector on that side they moved the shift and throttle linkages to the Port side. Notice all the rubber words.....been a long time and I didn't pay that much attention............buttttttt

Laddies can help you. Give him a shout.

The electric harness would be wrong but there might be a adapter available from Mercury, it's real hard to tell not knowing which box he has he may not even have the right ends to hook up to the engine and there are a lot of 4 cycle box floating around out there, so I really can't be of much help with out a part number.
