Anybody good with outboard motors? I just got a used 1997 25 hp Merc which appears to be in very good shape. Starts at first pull. I haven't put it in the water yet but I put muffs when I test it. I don't run it for very long (about 1-2 minutes) because I notice that water does not come out of the water exit (tell tail).

It sort of spits water a bit at first but then stops. I don't know if I should run it longer since maybe the tsat has not opened yet. or put the water intake in s tub of water instead of using muffs.

Any thoughts???

Re: Merc cooling question

I have 25hp Mercury a little newer but they should be about the same. Mine dosn't pee all the time. But to be sure the impeller is working remove the cover for the thermstate and turn over with starter or start for 10 or 15 seconds. Water will spray out if impeller is ok. Then check to make sure tube from thermstate and out of pee hole is open (Bugs like to hide in there). I then run it and check temp around head with a heat gun. If I remember correctly the temp on head should not get over 180F. Not sure of that, maybe someone can help here. Temp gun can be bought at harbor freight about $25. It works great. You also can get a crayon you mark on head and as long as it don't melt you are ok. I have never used them. Hope this helps
