1999 4 cyl Bayliner mercruiser sterndrive
found no fluid in the trim pump reservoir (yellow cap)
1. the reservoir has about a 1/4 inch gap at the top between it and the pump- is that normal? How can it get loose? How is it help on? would this gap cause a fluid leak?
2. I added fluid about 1/2 way but the trim pump just squeals- no drive movement. Would this gap cause the pump to suck air

No, it's not normal. The reservoir is held on with a screw on the bottom of the reservoir. Pull the pump assembly and check it out. Bet the screw rusted off/broke or.....

Not any more... Merc changed it for precisely the reason you're looking at... It's now held on by 4 small screws from the top. Have a close look at the photo and you can see 2 of the lugs. If you try and order the old reservoir, it supersedes to the new type. See Parts bulletin 2001-04.

His is still "SUPPOSED" to be held on by a single screw. But if rusted off as I suspect, the new screw and oring can still be ordered from Mercruiser (PN 18527) without buying the reservoir kit. Less than 4 bucks.
