Re: Merc Flywheel Puller

I brought a puller for a Merc 80hp 1983. My source told me it would be far cheaper to purchase a Evinrude/Johnson puller rather than the pukker one and it would do the trick. That, it did.

The Johnson was about £65 against £100 plus, for the Mercury.

It fits by removing three of the 5/16 dia bolts in the flywheel and screwing three bolts through the puller into the flywheel supplied with the kit.

I had it from Wills Marine, Kingsbridge, Devon. but I'm sure your local Evinrude/Johnson/Mercury dealer could order you one as I did.

Re: Merc Flywheel Puller

Mine's a different setup, the recess where the centre bolt is fitted has an internal thread, the puller screws in there and pushes on the crank....

Can seem to find one anywhere, even my local supplier said, erm duuno mate!

Re: Merc Flywheel Puller

I just used a harmonic balancer puller to remove my flywheel. Does just as good of a job as the mercury puller...only $15 at a local parts store.

Re: Merc Flywheel Puller

Unfortunately that wont work on my flywheel, theres no bolt holes on the top of the flywheel to fix a harmonic balance puller to...

Cant use a legged puller either as it causes damage to the ring gear (only held on with a couple of spot welds).

Do you have a lifting eye?
If you have some tools you can modify it to work as a puller also...

Thanks for the replies,

Managed to find a dealer who will lend me one for the cost of the carriage....

Maybe now I can get the thing back in the water before the UK summer dissappears!

Crashed,

All Mercurys 80 hp and mine have a threaded recess as you discribe. You should have a ring of 8? bolts of 1/2" af spanner size.
But the Evinrude/Johnson will still fit as I described. The centre bolt of the puller still pushes the centre of the crank with a special washer to centre the pushing bolt and the three bolts screw into the flywheel as I said to fit the puller body.

Its saves about 80quid.

Re: Merc Flywheel Puller

The later model Merc flywheels are integral-hubbed, and don't have flexplate bolts.

Only the correct puller will work. I know, I had a later 115 that I had to pull the flywheel off of, for stator replacement.

Ended up buying a JSRE puller which is better than the stock Merc puller because it has a thrust bearing inside. But, for non-heavy-duty use the regular Merc tool works well.

Either one pops the flywheel off like nobody's business.

BTW Crashed never said he had an 80 HP, the other gent had one.

Cheers..............ed

Re: Merc Flywheel Puller

Definately a 80hp, definately the later type flywheel with no bolts whatsoever on the top....

Puller arrived today, hopefully can identify the correct stator and get it working again now!
