Merc four cylinder

I used to have a 50 hp three cylinder, now have a four cylinder. Is there a preference as to the best motor or is it the year? If some one could give me the year i need it. Ser# 496378 50 hp model 500. Thanks for your trouble.

1978 the 4 cyl is a much smoother idling engine and as far as I'm concerned one of the better engine ever built
