Is The Hi Or Low Volume Pump Heating Up?there Is A Cool Fuel That Has A Cartrage Filter And In The Same Box Is The Pump, when It Will Not Start That Pump Sounds Funny And I Can Spray Carb Cleaner And Make The Engine Run.

Re: Merc Fuel Issue

Howdy,

That sure sounds a lot like a partially clogged filter or tank screen.

Those are some obvious things to check.....If you don't find something like that wrong, you're probably going to have to put a scan tool on it.

It's very important that the o-ring seal on the cartridge filter is sealed. Can't have any pressure or vacuum leaks in that unit. Also, check your water separater, a lot of water in there will cause fuel starvation. Make sure your fuel tank vent tube isn't plugged or pinched. Check fuel line connections for tightness.

If all in the fuel tank, lines and filter/separator checks out an you still have trouble, put an electric fuel pump on it and plate the fuel pump "hole" (after you pull the push rod out). I did that on my 24' Searay with a built 350 and was pleasantly surprised at how much better it ran. I had an Elderbrock 1200 series carb and at WOT she sucked plenty of fuel. Never had a problem after installing that electric pump.
