Hi All,

I have a GM 165 inline 6. Last summer i took it for a 500 yard ride while the stern drive impeller was not functioning. Needless to say i over heated the engine. over heated is an understatement, the engine went nuclear!
I've since repaired the impeller on got back on the water but she just doesnt run the same anymore. It starts easily and runs but, after 10-15 min of running i get grey blow-by and hard to start and runs like Cr*p.
I got the engine pulled and the head pulled. Mech called me in the show me things and give me some options.
The head or block did not suffer in damage no cracks or warping. One of the cylinders has a bit of rust in it (engine sat all winter)
He asked me if I wanted to get the engine rebuilt by a machinist. New piston and rings and everything else that comes with a rebuild. $2,500.00. The mechanic can't get a compression reading or anything until a new gasket set is installed (~$400 for the set). I didnt pay much for this boat and motor and i dont want to put a lot of money in it if i dont have to.
Seeing to boat ran fine before the "COOK".

1. should i get the rebuild?
or
2. Should i go with the gasket set and take my chances?

Anyone else ever run into this dilema?

Ayuh,... I'd think your Options are to Rebuild it,... Or Junk it...

I Really doubt it'll run the same with just a head set of gaskets...
The Rings are No doubt Shot...
Also,...
Check out the Exhaust system,.. No doubt the shutters are Burnt, along with who knows what else...
