Basically i have an old Mercury Thunderbolt 650cc 65hp 1970 with a wiring harness going to control box with the following colours coming out from the old harness

The wiring thatis here http://www.maxrules.com/oldmercs/Wiring/1966ona/30.PDF

Brown
Grey
Salmon
Red
White
Yellow
Black

And what i want to do basically is wire it up to my new Quicksilver Commander Control box which is for a newer motor... With the only change being i want to implement the kill switch so in an emergency if i were to fall overboard the motor would stand (safety is my first priority)

Out of my new Key Switch which i bought for the commander box is a quicksilver original replacement and i have these wires coming out of it

Yellow with black stripe
Yellow with red stripe
Black wiht yellow stripe split into 2 cables on end
Red Split into 2 cables on end
Purple - Split into 2 cables on end
Black split into 2 cables on end..

And i have a slight idea to put it all together but im kinda lost.. I would really need a digram or something to help me out ;)

If any of you wireing gurus could help me out by making a diagram or just providing me with some tips it would be great.

Thanks again iboat users and rick for pointing me in the right direction

Maybe this will help. You'll probably have to download it and increase the size.

Black yellow strp is the kill circuit..Ground it to kill.
Salmon? I think that'a orange? Forgive me, I'm a florida cracker, and aint never seen a salmon in it's natural environment... but thought they were pinkish collored?

Probably your salmon colored wire is faded-orange, and if so, it is the kill wire, so it would go to black w/yellow stipe.

Otherwise, you best double-check against the book.
Which I aint got (goin by memory, and werked on many).

nah its pink because even if i cut the wire back from insulation were itsbeen protected its still pinkish salmon colour ;(

The kill switch on my new quicksilver box has one wire connected to the aluminium housing by a screw and the other one hanging free. Do i connect the one hanging free to my Black with yellow stripe in my key or do i need to connect it to some wire in my old wireing harness because i don't have any black/yellow stripe wires.....

If you have look at the wires i have on my old box

http://www.maxrules.com/oldmercs/Wiring/1966ona/30.PDF

the salmon wire is connected to the "Off" terminal on my old switch ... So would i have to short the wire connect it to my kill switch then the wire coming out from other side of kill switch to the key switch?

The rest i can probably figure out !! just this kill switch is bugging me

Thanks guys

I called someone with book (bro inlaw). He says you are correct. There IS a salmon wire. It goes to "E" on the ign switch. It is shorted to "D" to kill the ignition, so it is confirmed."Salmon" is kill. You can confirm, by finding "D" to be black,or ground.
So, the black with yel;low stripe goes to salmon.

My bro inlaw scanned the page with your schematic, if interested, and if you are able to receive a .JPG file.

Your ignition switch's terminals are labled.
"E" should have a salmon wire on it.
Connect the Black with yellow stripe from the motor's harness to that "E" terminal on the switch.
In the 'off' position, "E" is connected to "D" inside the ignition switch. "D" gets ground, should be SOLID black, but regardless of color, it will be the ground wire.
Check the terminals on the ignition switch both 'on' and 'off', with a ohmeter.
There should be continuity only in the OFF position.
If not, the problem is there, in the switch. Again, with ohmeter on 10 or 100ohm scale, make sure the "D" wire is motor ground.
It should absolutely werk. But my biggest concern is the voltage present on the salmon wire, that the operator remains insulated from it.
<EDIT> I just re-read, the kill switch at the motor, if so equipped, should also have one lead black with yellow stripe, and the other terminal (there will only be two terminals), going to motor ground, or black.
The Emergency kill, or lanyard switch is the same.(black yel stripe, and ground).

The way it werks is the black with yellow stripe or salmon, is not connected to anything to run.
To kill the motor, this wire is connected to ground.

Y2, you should only get "fire" in one position.

The run position.

So what did you find out? I'm dying of curiosity.
One more test you can try if you haven't found out what was going on...use the ohmeter, and check for conitnuity of the black/yellow wire at the control box to the switchbox. It may be open or the "mercury" switch at the motor is open.
