I have a 53 Wizard WG7 that I have found to be mostly a Merc KG7 10 hp. Looking at drawings It appears to have the Phelon ignition. Closer inspection to my coils one is a REPCO with no numbers and the other is a Tecumseh 30546. A quick google search found a Tecumseh replacement for $13.50 at http://tewarehouse.com/7-01612 Does anyone know if this is an acceptable coil? I am asking because just because it is on there dosent mean it will work. The price is considerably cheaper than the $60 Phelon repro.

Thanks. ..Tim

Re: Merc KG7 Ignition coil swap/compatibility

I've seen several different coil retrofits over the years, mostly using the common Johnrude coils. The motors don't really care one way or the other. I prefer the OEM style as you don't have to modify anything else to make them work. The old Mercs (and their Wizzie derivatives) are worth spending a little money on...
There's a guy goes by the handle of Old Outboard Jim who offers the REPCO coils for cheap:

Might be able to work a deal with him.

Thanks for the info and the link. I ordered the Tecumseh ones to try but also need some replacements for a Evinrude 5.5 fisherman I am working on too.
