1985 Sea Ray SRV300 Twin 5.7L Mercruiser with Alpha Gen 1 outdrives.

I was reading in the Mercruiser Service Manual (Number 6) about installing the shift cable. It said to install the shift cable retaining nut using the shift cable removal/installation tool. No more then 2 threads on retaining nut should be exposed.

The 2 threads thing is throwing me. Are they saying that when you install the cable, you don't tighten it down completely to the bell housing? The one I removed was tightened all the way. What is the reasoning for leaving some thread exposed?

Thank you in advance...

The 2 threads thing is to be sure its in enough to allow FULL travel of the shifter if you left 4 threads it would not travel all the way

If it keeps turning you have to get it tight

tommays
