Hello to everyone. I need some help with a motor that I am interested in. I'm no expert with outboards, acctually got my first one last year, but I'm looking to move up in HP. OK, here we go, the motor is a Merc, model 15ELRC 4S . How do I break down the model number, into what it stands for, or what those numbers, letters mean? Secondly, the motor is set up for a remote control, I'd like a tiller handle on it. Is it possible to put a tiller handle on it? if so, how difficult would it be, for someone like me, who is mechanically inclined, but no expert. Is it a common thing to have done, if so, would an experienced Merc mechanic be able to do it correctly? I appreciate your help and advise, to whom ever replies back to this thread. :)

Re: Merc model # info & tiller question

Hi Mainer1. I did a conversion the other way on a 25 4 stroke a while back. It cost about 350 in parts and dealer wanted 800 to do the job themsleves. I think the Tiller may be cheaper. I see it is 123 dollars for Tiller assembly at Doug Russell. I use this site for breakdowns as they have good illustrations. I tried to give you the one to go direct to 15 hp, but iboats doesn't like the parrenthesis. http://www.dougrussell.com/partscatalog/collections/index.cfm?fuseaction=collectdetails&colid=01 This will take you to where you pick the model 15 Four Stroke. The E means Electric start and charging model. Usually has about 5 amps or more than manual start model would put out. The L means long shaft. The RC i'm sure is Remote Control. and as you know 4S is four stroke. I'd ask dealer how much as this may only be about a 400 dollar job. Another great source is to buy a Merc service and parts manual for this model as they have all the part breakdown too. Costs about 25 bucks. Good luck and I'm sure you will get a lot more help from others on iboats if you run into a problem.

Re: Merc model # info & tiller question

I've done a few kit conversions to make tiller models fit remote applications. I used to put all the parts I took off in a box as a retro-kit. I'm not sure how many other mechanics do this. That's usually left up to riggers and alot of it ends-up in the trash. :( Mega dealers often get motors based on price rather than function. Alot of them will convert a tiller to remote and save money (they think). Check around, make a few calls. Good luck.
