Removed trim pump due to oil from the resevior getting up into the electric motor, following Merc manual to take pump unit apart to replace seals, and I stripped one of the dang screw heads! They are a wierd star type head and the manual says to use a 3/16 socket, which I did but still managed to kill one. Now I can maybe get a small vice grips on it but I would have to remove one of the pressure relief valves to get a good bite on it, but the manual says once the valve is moved it is now out of adjustment. Anyone know how I can get that screw out? I can't seem to find just the pump body anywhere online either, and I would hate to have to spend a couple hundred $ when all I need is a seal/o-ring or whatever is letting oil up into the pump motor. Ideas anyone?

You need to go to sears and look for a drill out screw remover.

Difficult to offer advise without pictures. Without seeing it, could you get in with a small blade and cut the head off, separate whatever it was holding together and them remove the rest with pliers?

Guess I could drill it out, just didn't want to have all that metal flying all over the place, but that is an option. Maybe I can get a dremel in there and grind a slot so I could remove it with a screwdriver? I know I could get it off with the vice grips, just afraid of what the manual says about removing the pressure relief valve. I will try to post a pic, but I don't know if I remember how to shrink it down small enough for it to upload, might take me awhile...

Sears makes a set of screw removers for striped screws they work great and don't require any drilling. They are called screw-out. 19.99

Thanks, got a Sears close by so I'll head over there tomorrow, is it in the Automotive section or Tools? I like it, Screw-out for screw-ups!

Here's the underside of the pump body, the small black screw on the right of center is the one I stripped, and the tall octagon pillars are the pressure relief valves the manual says not to disturb... Hope the pic is viewable?
