Re: merc outboard help

Look on the transom bracket for the serial number. Need to know that for year. The oil you see is normal. Unburned oil.

Re: merc outboard help

Hi Geore

You need your motor serial # to identify the year and model. These facts are important for ordering spare parts and for members of this board to give you help.

As you are going to do maintenance work yourself a manual is a must - the $$ spend will come back again and again.

It sounds as if your lower unit has a bad seal but getting closer to this involves some basic investigation on your part (another task that is easily done by the manual's description).

From your description it sounds as if you have a 6-cyl inline 150hp. If the serial is not readable some of the experinced folks here may be able to define the year if you describe the decals/colors on the cowling.

Re: merc outboard help

I did a little research for you and found this out: All merc 1500's (150hp) all use the same impellor. Part# is 47-89984T4 and it costs about $20. Hope this helps.

Re: merc outboard help

Your motor is a 1977, back then they didnt go by the model number on those motors, they just used the serial number.

Re: merc outboard help

The thing to do is to check the oil in the lower unit before you ask a tech to take it appart. just remove the fill plug,(above the cavitation plate.) and remove the filler plug just at the skeg, use a good gearcase oil and fill from the bottom. This allows the air to escape from the top hole. Close the top screw first without removing the gearcase container then quickly install the plug in the bottom. (NOTE) If the oil is clean, and not milky looking then you have no problem with a leak at the lower unit, but rather oil from running the OB at idle.
